Vermont extreme freeskier Ryan Hawks passed away during a competition in 2011. According to his father Peter Hawks in the video above, Ryan cast a big aura with his magnetic personality, positive views on life and dedication to his passions. Peter created the Flying Ryan Hawks Foundation to spread the importance of Ryan’s 14 core principles discovered on his laptop after his death. You can get a sense of Ryan’s charisma by just listening to his father in these three videos produced by Vermont’s Long Trail Brewing Co., which is once again selling Flyin Ryan IPA, a brew dedicated to Ryan with proceeds going to the foundation.
“As I’ve said many times,” Peter notes in the video above, “we lost his body back there in 2011, but his spirit and his core energy continue to be a current event. It’s a great privilege to run a foundation that extends the impact of his life.”
The beer is an expression of Ryan Hawks 14 core values, which are printed on the can and listed in the first video above. The other two videos below focus on the foundation’s Flyin Ryan Decisions Program, which is a four-step curriculum that encourages the exploration of Ryan’s core values concept by developing your own personal set of core values that are presented to peers, teachers, coaches, family and others. The third video is focused on the Flyin Ryan Adventure Scholarship Program, which provides grants that acknowledge and encourage the pursuit of passion grounded in core values. This is how Peter describes potential scholarship applicants.
“We think lives well lived are lives that are lived in alignment with passion,” says Peter in the third video below. “So, if someone is willing to forgo temporal pleasures and distractions and the advice of critics in exchange for being real and being authentic and identifying with what they want to do and finding a way to do it, these are the people who write us and ask for our help. [These are] people that are passionate about any activities — not skiing necessarily.”
This year’s iteration of Flyin Ryan IPA adds an untracked amount of Simcoe, Amarillo and Galaxy dry hops to deliver an extremely juicy American IPA experience. First introduced as a limited, draught-only offering in winter 2014/15, Flyin Ryan IPA is now available in delicious 16-oz cans throughout New England and New York. Pick some up and watch these videos.
