It was only five years ago on July 1, 2009, that Sun King Brewing Co. fired up its brew kettle and crafted its first batch of craft beer, becoming the first full-scale production brewery in Indianapolis since 1948. In celebration of its fifth anniversary, Sun King will be hosting a party, aptly named SKB 5, on June 28 at the brewery, featuring live music, Indy’s best food trucks and the release of its most anticipated seasonal beer Grapefruit Jungle IPA.
Grapefruit Jungle (GFJ) is a classic American IPA that was devised by head brewer Dave Colt and showcases hops from the Pacific Northwest to create an intense citrus hop flavor explosion that is reminiscent of biting into a fresh grapefruit. For the second time, GFJ will be released in its very own 16 oz. can as well as on draft throughout Indiana.
“Grapefruit Jungle is the first beer that we ever made that sold out in a matter of days,” said Sun King Owner and Head Brewer Dave Colt. “In response to its popularity, every year we make more, and every year it sells out just as fast. The beer is a tribute to the birth of rock and roll, and since most of us at the brewery are hop heads, it became the perfect choice for a special release party in celebration of our anniversary.”
Sun King Brewing Co. is the brainchild of Dave Colt and Clay Robinson. With the help of famiy and friends – Omar Robinson, Andy Fagg and Steve Koers – the first keg of Sun King beer rolled out the door for delivery. Now available on tap and in cans at hundreds of locations around Indiana, Sun King has grown into the second-largest beer brewer in the state of Indiana.
