Lawson’s Finest Liquids has achieved platinum-level certification in the Electric Vehicle Adoption Leadership (EVAL) program. This top-tier recognition reflects the brewery’s commitment to advancing clean energy and sustainable business practices. Supported by the U.S. Department of Energy, EVAL celebrates companies that drive forward green transportation, offering certifications to businesses that provide EV charging infrastructure and promote EV use among employees and customers. From the press release:
“Thirty percent of greenhouse gas emissions are contributed by the transportation sector,” said Carra Cheslin, Social Impact Program (SIP) Manager. “One of the ways that we are responding to this environmental issue is by supporting the use of electric vehicles as part of a brighter future, and we invite the public to charge right here on our campus!”
At Lawson’s Waitsfield, Vermont, brewery, sustainability shines through in every aspect. The site features 12 level-two electric vehicle charging stations, including Tesla and Chargepoint units. Powered by the state’s largest solar canopy, these chargers enable eco-conscious beer lovers to recharge while enjoying Lawson’s world-class brews.
Solar power at the heart of Lawson’s operations
Lawson’s solar journey began in 2019 with the installation of a brewery roof solar array. This 43kW AC system, consisting of over 140 solar panels, produces approximately 52,000 kWh of electricity annually. In 2022, the brewery took its commitment to renewable energy even further, constructing Vermont’s largest solar canopy (pictured above). The canopy, with 495 solar modules above 40 parking spaces, generates an impressive 215kW of electricity. Together, these systems offset 60 percent of the brewery’s utility bills while supporting sustainable beer production.
The energy harnessed from these solar systems supplies enough power to produce approximately 2.4 million cans of beer annually. From brewing to serving, Lawson’s integrates renewable energy into every step of its operations, proving that environmental responsibility can pair seamlessly with great beer.
Impact report highlights sustainability achievements
Earlier this year, Lawson’s Finest released its first-ever impact report. This comprehensive document outlines the brewery’s dedication to its Social Impact Program (SIP), which focuses on building stronger communities, empowering employees and fostering sustainability. Since 2018, SIP has donated over $2 million to more than 300 nonprofit organizations.
Key Initiatives Under Lawson’s SIP:
- Green Is Grand: A focus on environmental sustainability, including a campus-wide solar project that powers 100 percent of the brewery’s operations.
- Sunshine Fund: Encouraging taproom guests to donate to Vermont nonprofits in place of traditional tipping, raising over $312,000 in 2023.
- Good Brews for a Cause: Creating limited-release beers to support community and environmental causes, including disaster relief and cultural preservation.
- Sip of Support: Funding charitable events and organizations that promote healthy communities, food security and natural resource protection.
- Great Place to Work: Prioritizing employee well-being with benefits like profit-sharing, paid sabbaticals and a focus on workplace diversity and inclusion.
The impact report highlights Lawson’s holistic approach to business, balancing profitability with purpose. Its focus on sustainability, from solar energy to EV charging infrastructure, aligns with its mission to support a thriving planet and community.
EV leadership and the future of brewing
The platinum-level EV certification adds another milestone to Lawson’s sustainability journey. The brewery’s investment in electric vehicle infrastructure demonstrates its leadership in adopting eco-friendly practices. The addition of Tesla and Chargepoint chargers ensures that customers and employees can conveniently charge their vehicles while contributing to Vermont’s renewable energy goals. Lawson’s efforts also support Vermont’s ambitious target of achieving 90 percent renewable energy by 2050. The brewery’s investment in clean energy and electric vehicles exemplifies how businesses can play a pivotal role in advancing environmental sustainability.
