“What we wanted was to create a highly drinkable bourbon-style beer that was a counterpoint to the heavy, bourbon-style stouts that were already on the market,” says Kim Jordan, cofounder of New Belgium Brewing Co., in the video above.
She’s discussing Oakspire which is a bourbon ale using both oak spirals (read what those are here) steeped in Knob Creek whiskey and char from inside the barrel to create a unique take on the whiskey-beer genre.
It’s a limited-edition collab between New Belgium and Knob Creek. Oakspire even utilizes a high rye mash bill just like a distiller, and the finished product exudes smooth notes of toffee, vanilla and caramel. The video’s worth watching just to see Jordan whack a barrel to open the bunghole, proving she is graceful at just about everything she does.
