As pioneering San Diego craft brewery Karl Strauss Brewing Co. approaches its 35th anniversary, it is going back to its roots. The brewery excitedly announced the acquisition of its original brewery/brewpub this week.
“The pride we have for this acquisition cannot be overstated,” said President Matt Rattner and CEO Chris Cramer. “We’ve poured our passion into this craft for decades, and witnessing it come full circle as we near our 35th anniversary is a remarkable achievement, serving as a testament to our enduring commitment to the city, the regional brewing industry, and our guests.”
The sale of the 1157 Columbia Street location in Downtown San Diego went through on Oct. 1, and brewery leadership says they have big ambitions for the original location. The plan is to reimagine the brewery space as a homage to the San Diego brewing scene, catering to the evolving tastes of the next generation of drinkers.
Founded in February 1989, Karl Strauss was the first craft brewery in the City of San Diego since Prohibition, helping launch San Diego as a mecca for craft beer fans and shape a thriving industry that now boasts more than 9,500 independent craft breweries across the United States.
The company’s original Brew Master Karl M. Strauss left behind a legacy of unwavering commitment to quality brewing. His dedication to the craft paved the way for future generations of brewers. Today, Karl Strauss carries forward this rich heritage with brewers throughout the country, and especially in San Diego, living the legacy of independent craft beer and infusing it with a modern twist of creativity and character.
