Former John I. Haas Inc. CEO Alex Barth has been awarded the prestigious “Order of the Hop” at the 2024 International Hop Growers Convention, held this week in Lublin, Poland. The nomination was submitted by the Hop Growers of America, reflecting Alex’s enduring contributions to the hop industry.
During his tenure as CEO of Haas from 2008 to 2023, Alex Barth transformed the company from a commodity trading business into the innovation leader in the hop industry. In addition, his decades-long leadership in the Hop Breeding Company as its Chairman also led to the introduction of hops such as Citra® and Mosaic, revolutionizing the global craft beer industry.
“I am deeply honored to receive the Order of the Hop award,” said Alex Barth. “I extend my heartfelt thanks to the Hop Growers of America for the nomination and to the International Hop Growers Convention for this recognition. It has been a privilege to work alongside such dedicated professionals and growers in an industry that I am so passionate about.”
In addition to his impact on Haas, Alex has been instrumental in the success of the BarthHaas Group, the world’s largest hop business. He now serves as Chairman of John I. Haas Inc., and BarthHaas GmbH & Co. KG. Alex’s commitment to the hop industry is further demonstrated by his participation in various industry boards and his role as a keynote speaker at numerous conferences.
The Order of the Hop, instituted in the 14th century by John the Fearless, is one of the most prestigious honors in the hop industry. Awarded biennially at the International Hop Growers Convention, it recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to the prosperity and development of hops, an essential ingredient in beer production. This accolade symbolizes a long-standing tradition of excellence and innovation within the hop community, celebrating those who have dedicated their careers to advancing the craft and ensuring the industry’s sustainability.
