Abstrax, an industry leader in research, production and marketing of botanically derived terpenes, has officially announced its Hops Division with a focus on elevating beer and beyond beer products to the next level. The expansion includes the addition of Jim Ringo — who previously led sales and marketing for one of the largest global hop suppliers — as vice president, sales and marketing for Abstrax Hops.
“By launching the Hops Division, we’re continuing to invest in state-of-the-art technologies to drive value and innovation,” said Max Koby, Abstrax cofounder and chief executive officer. “Plus, the addition of Jim Ringo gives us the strategic leadership we need to disrupt an industry that isn’t currently up to speed with the latest extraction combined with 3D analytical technologies and their transformative power.”
Abstrax is applying its knowledge, technology and resources to help brewers gain competitive edge and relevance in an environment where the consumption of mainstream and craft beer is declining due to the increasing popularity of beyond beer and spirits based ready to drink products. Abstrax initially entered the beer and beyond beer industries with its Delta Hop Profiles, with the goal of delivering botanically derived natural hop flavors reproduced from popular hop varieties grown around the world.
This is all being accomplished in Abstrax’s state-of-the-art laboratory, where fresh and kilned hops are tested and 2D/3D modeling of target hop profiles is undertaken. Abstrax created an industry leading sensory quantification software application known as Terplytics to create a living record of each varietal called a 3D Metabolity Fingerprint. Once input materials are selected, extracted and refined, it’s possible to standardize the botanical terpenes required for a formulation via molecular distillation and emulsion technology.
“Thanks to Abstrax’s innovative technology, now it’s possible for brewers to literally obtain the exact hop flavor they want from a specific hop sample and reproduce it with accuracy, economically and on a consistent as needed basis,” said Ringo. “This has never existed in hops because the industry standard of hops grown on farms are subject to annual variations from weather, disease and supply imbalances. Brewers can replace a majority of their hop pellets with Delta Hop Profiles and gain an immediate 30 to 50 percent cost reduction plus up to 30 percent increase in beer yield versus using standard hop pellets.”
In addition to the Delta Hop Profiles, the Abstrax Hop Division portfolio also includes:
- BrewGas — a portfolio of cannabis inspired cultivars and TTB approved “dank” natural flavors.
- AI Terp Effects — a portfolio of TTB approved mood enhancing functional terpene blend.
