Formed in 2003, the Hop Breeding Co. is a joint venture between Yakima Chief Ranches LLC and John I. Haas Inc. — both pioneers in the Pacific Northwest American hop industry. Hop Breeding Co.’s mission is to develop pest-resistant and disease-resistant hop varieties with strong commercial qualities, and it’s done pretty well that mission. I’m sure you know some of its hop products, which go by the name of Citra, Mosaic, Sabro, Ekuanot, Pahto, Loral and Talus.
Well, there’s a new hop coming out of the Hop Brewing Co. Well, it’s not exactly new, but it’s going by a new name. Developed by the Hop Breeding Co. way back in 2007, HBC 586 is now getting an official name — Krush. This unique hop variety bursts with citrus (orange), tropical (mango, guava), stone fruit (peach), berry (mixed berry) and woody (resin) characteristics that deliver complex, ripe and punchy aromas. Krush presents similarly on the bine and in the glass. Just watch the video above where Tessa Schilaty, technical marketing manager at Yakima Chief Hops, says:
“One thing that’s really fun and exciting about Krush is that it smells the same on the table as it comes through in beer, so it’s really a kind of what you smell is what you get.”
The video includes interviews from brewers like Brad Benson, founder of Stoup Brewing, and Steve Luke, founder at Cloudburst Brewing, about using Krush in the beer-making process. This highly unique and versatile hop is a fruit cocktail in cone form and highly impactful in beer. It is a brewer favorite that shines in all styles of beer and hop combinations — especially when making IPAs and hazy IPAs. Learn more about the newly named Krush hop in the video above.
