A cool new award-winning indie comedy has caught our collective attention at Craft Brewing Business. The movie For When You Get Lost raises a toast to family, friendship and the world of craft beer. Streaming on Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV and Vudu/Fandango right now, this heartfelt film captures sisterhood while also brewing a love letter to northern California’s iconic beer scene.
A road trip full of heart and hops
The film follows June Stevenson (Jennifer Sorenson) and her sister Cami (Elizabeth Alderfer) as they journey up the Pacific Coast. Stops include landmarks and, of course, some of the West Coast’s most beloved breweries: Six Rivers Brewery, Lost Coast Brewery, Redwood Curtain Brewing Co., North Coast Brewing and more. The film also ventures into Astoria, Oregon and Novato, Marin County.
Craft beer as a Character
Screenwriter and co-star Jennifer Sorenson uses her knowledge of the craft beer industry to breathe authenticity into the brewery scenes. Having worked in the beer world herself, Sorenson captures the welcoming vibe of these spots, making the audience feel part of the adventure.
Behind the scenes: A labor of love
Director Michelle Steffes admired the script’s humor, emotional depth and raw authenticity from the start. Despite its ambitious scope — filming across three states with a skeleton crew — the team embraced the challenge. Filming took place at famous locations like the Avenue of the Giants and Glass Beach, with support from local communities and the tight-knit craft beer scene. From the production notes:
I loved the script from the very first scene and it only got better from there. It was funny, authentic, emotional, and surprising. The lead character of June, to be played by Jennifer herself, was complex, heartbreaking, and hilarious. I related whole-heartedly to her broken and often self-sabotaging journey of reconciliation, forgiveness and self-discovery. Anyone who works in indie filmmaking knows what a gift it is to get the opportunity to work on a story like this, and I immediately said that I wanted to direct the film. My only hesitation was the scope — the story took place in three states at many locations, including an airport, a boat, and multiple breweries. Jennifer assured me that the producers and the director of photography had a plan in place, and what we didn’t know, we would figure out.
The real-life inspiration
Sorenson’s screenplay draws from her personal experience. After learning of her father’s terminal illness, she embarked on a transformative road trip, receiving tips from strangers along the way. That journey became the heart of For When You Get Lost, evolving from autobiography into a story about three sisters navigating complex family dynamics.
Cool cast with indie roots
Jennifer Sorenson shines as June, a character blending heartbreak and humor. Elizabeth Alderfer, known for United States of Al and Orange is the New Black, perfectly captures Cami’s energy. The film also stars Aja Blair (Euphoria), Adam Chambers (The Big Bang Theory) and lots more.
