Diatomaceous earth or D.E. is a great filtration aid. D.E. is used in the brewing process to remove fine particles from beer without affecting the color, flavor or body. Alas, small portable D.E. filters are hard to find. In fact, the only one Minneapolis’ Utepils Brewing Co. could find small enough for its operations (about 6,000 bbls a year) was made by the Swiss beverage technology experts at Bucher Unipektin (distributed in America by Gusmer).
Eric Harper, brewmaster at Utepils Brewing, discusses the compact coolness of the SECUJET 2.0 mobile candle filter by Bucher Unipektin in the video above. The SECUJET 2.0 size and mobility (with candles hanging from a top plate) were specifically designed for the needs of today’s craft brewers. The design of the filter and the usage of the same STABOX candles (25-mm diameter) make it the smaller version of Bucher Unipektin’s large SYNOX filters but with the ease of plug and playness on a mobile skid. Here are some of the unit’s advantages:
- Compact skid mounted design
- Movable with wheels
- Low water and energy consumption
- Long service life due to a high-quality design
- Very little maintenance required; no moving parts inside
- Efficient cleaning device inside the vessel
- Dosing pump separately mounted on the skid for easy maintenance
In the video above, Harper specifically notes the SECUJET 2.0’s simple design (basically no moving parts), compactness, mobility and its user-friendly operation as his favorite selling points. Check it out.
