Schilling Hard Cider is set for a brand and planet refresh in 2025. The Seattle-based cidery is relaunching its Excelsior Imperial Ciders family with both a new brand identity and a significant advancement in sustainability: Schilling Hard Cider can now say packs of Excelsior Imperial Apple 12-oz cans are Climate Neutral.
“The relaunch of our Excelsior line, coupled with our commitment to Climate Neutrality for Imperial Apple, represents a bold step forward in our mission to deliver unparalleled taste while actively combating climate change,” expressed Colin Schilling, CEO and Co-Founder of Schilling Hard Cider. “We’re proving that sustainability and superior quality can go hand in hand, setting a positive example for the craft beverage sector.”
Schilling Hard Cider’s business is rooted in eco-friendly practices with a focus on reducing carbon emissions. Over the past three years, Schilling has also donated over $200,000 in environmental action through various nonprofit organizations across the US and implemented the alcohol industry’s first 100% EV-powered sales fleet. Schilling Cider has also completed annual voluntary carbon inventories since 2021, which gives the company a full understanding of its total carbon footprint and the lifecycle carbon footprints of its products.

Schilling Cider Scope emissions
As of 2023, only 15% of the total carbon footprint for Schilling products comes from direct Schilling operations and production (Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions). The remaining 85% of carbon emissions (Scope 3) are attributed to Schilling’s suppliers and downstream partners such as apple cultivation, beverage can manufacturing, distributor delivery trucks and retailer power consumption to refrigerate their ciders at grocery stores.
Schilling has gone beyond reducing Scope 1 and 2 emissions by partnering with Tradewater to purchase carbon offset credits that eliminate 105% of the emissions associated with Imperial Apple 12oz cans by funding projects that permanently prevent emissions that would have otherwise occurred. Specifically, Schilling funds projects through Tradewater to cap orphaned oil and gas wells and destroy refrigerant gasses which offset the carbon footprint of Excelsior Imperial Apple 12oz cans.
To ensure full transparency, all carbon credits purchased by Schilling are fully traceable; each serial number for every carbon credit and their product sustainability declaration document is available on their website. The company’s Climate Neutral claim complies with the rigorous California Carbon Disclosure regulations, reinforcing its commitment to trustworthy, measurable sustainability. Additionally, Schilling is proud to be the first and only cider company to conduct voluntary full-scope annual Greenhouse Gas Inventories since 2021.
