The solar eclipse that will be making its way across the United States on April 8 is a once in a lifetime event for the areas in the best viewing position. Whether you’re in the path or not, such a special event, of course, calls for some special edition beers.
Northern Vermont will be in the path of totality from about 2:14 p.m. to 4:37 p.m., marking Vermont’s first total eclipse event since 1932. Lawson’s Finest Liquids, based in Vermont, is releasing Path of Totality (7.5% ABV), a Black IPA. Path of Totality will be available only in the path of totality for a limited time at the Lawson’s Finest’s destination brewery and taproom in Waitsfield, Vt., and in limited quantities at select retailers in New York.
“Vermont is an amazing place to visit any time,” said Lawson’s Finest Liquids CEO Adeline Druart. “But the eclipse is an extra special reason to come and enjoy all that the area has to offer. As part of a warm welcome to all eclipse-gazers, please stop by the taproom and try Path of Totality, brewed just for this once-in-a-lifetime occasion.”
The recipe for this typically hop-forward IPA is brewed with Eclipse hops and darker-than-usual malts, lending the beer a dark color and roasty malt qualities. A portion of proceeds from the beer will benefit ECHO, Leahy Center for Lake Champlain, whose mission is to inspire and engage families in the joy of scientific discovery, wonder of nature and care of Lake Champlain.
Lakewood Brewing in Garland, Texas, launched a new seasonal for the occasion – Sunburst Wheat (5.5% ABV) – that tastes like a Texas Sunset. It is light and refreshing with soft hints of fruit. The bar and kitchen will open early the day of the eclipse, and the family-owned brewery is providing solar glasses to the first 75 people for FREE. The Great North American Eclipse will be seen in Texas at 1:40 p.m. with Dallas nestled right in the path of totality for three minutes and 51 seconds, making it the longest duration across North America.
In Cleveland, Market Garden Brewpub & Nano Brew are celebrating the total solar eclipse and the Guardians’ home opener, with The Totality Hazy IPA.
Schlafly Beer released a complete spring variety pack, Throwing Shade, for the celestial celebrations. The 12-pack offers four different beers of the best of Schlafly’s brew styles from light to dark, such as the Eclipse IPA to Totality Black Lager.
“We know that the spring solar eclipse will bring people together around the country to witness this phenomenal event, and we want to be a part of those celebrations,” CEO David Schlafly explains, We always look to identify themes with our seasonal sampler packs that spark conversation, and there’s a lot of buzz around the solar eclipse.”
During the last solar eclipse in 2017, Schlafly Beer released a special edition pack of the brewery’s popular Summer Lager. Now, with four different styles to enjoy, the acclaimed craft brewer’s seasonal sampler offers the perfect pack to pick up for the eclipse or any outside gathering as the weather transitions from winter to spring. Schlafly’s Throwing Shade variety 12-Pack features three cans of each of the four beers:
- Eclipse IPA (ABV: 7.0%): Featuring Australian-grown Eclipse Hops, this juicy & bright IPA features aromatic notes of sweet citrus & an undertone of fresh pine.
- Passion Fruit Galaxy Wheat (ABV: 5.5%): Brewed with a splash of Passion Fruit puree and a dash of Galaxy Hops, this unfiltered wheat ale is full of tropical flavor.
- Shadow Bands Pilsner (ABV: 5.0%): A hoppy & crisp Pilsner named for the phenomena of the moon’s shadow that ripples right before totality.
- Totality Black Lager (ABV: 5.0%): This beer showcases the sometimes overlooked style of Black Lager, which proves that a dark beer can be light-bodied and crisp.
