As we noted earlier, it is Craft Malt Week this week! So, shoutout to Cortez Colo.’s WildEdge Brewing Collective and its “From The Fields” (5.6% ABV). This limited release Dunkelweizen-inspired beer made is with 100% Colorado-sourced ingredients, including a new grain varietal provided by Colorado-based craft malthouse, Root Shoot Malting. From The Fields is available at the WildEdge Brewing Collective taproom beginning Wednesday, Oct. 4.
From the Fields is made with support from the Colorado Grain Chain, a non-profit that promotes small businesses and raises awareness around locally grown grains. The group creates opportunities for collaboration by connecting farmers, maltsters, millers, bakers, brewers, distillers, chefs, suppliers, food hubs and consumers. The Colorado Grain Chain provided WildEdge with a microgrant this year to fund the brew that celebrates all elements of the Colorado craft beer supply chain.
“Colorado Grain Chain is doing great work,” said Todd Olander of Root Shoot Malting. “We’re excited to collaborate with other passionate people in the industry and proud to be part of it. Try From The Fields to experience the power of hand-crafted, local raw ingredients. It’s a true taste of Colorado.”
Every ingredient in the From the Fields is sourced from Colorado for a uniquely local flavor. It’s crafted from specialty malts from Root Shoot, most notably the Colorado maltster’s new Munich Wheat. Also included in the recipe are Root Shoot’s Genie Pale Malt, malted white wheat, Chocolate Malt, and C20 Malt, as well as some locally grown un-malted winter wheat from the Cortez Milling Company, hops from Billy Goat Hop Farm, and yeast from Inland Island.
“Root Shoot’s Munich Wheat is a fun new malt to contribute rich flavors to From The Fields,” said Tucker Robinson, brewer and owner of WildEdge Brewing Collective. “With notes of caramel, brown sugar, honey, and crusty bread, it is a unique way to craft this style of darker wheat beer.”
Brooklyn Brewery keeping West African grain fonio in spotlight
Brooklyn Brewery announced the launch of Fonio Rising, a Double Pilsner (6.4% ABV) made with the climate-resistant ancient West African grain fonio, brewed in collaboration with purpose-driven food business Yolélé.
Known as the “seed of the universe,” fonio, a grain in the millet family, has thrived in West Africa for over 5,000 years. What sets fonio apart is its ability to flourish in areas where other crops struggle. In arid regions near the Sahel Desert, this highly nutritious and gluten-free grain thrives in nutrient-poor soil without the need for fertilizers or pesticides.
“No fertilizers, no irrigation, no pesticides, no insecticides, no fungicides – nothing,” explains Garrett Oliver. “Whether you look at it from an environmental perspective, a social benefit perspective for the farming communities, or from a brewing perspective, fonio is so good that it seems like someone must have just made it up.”
Yolélé‘s mission is to bring underutilized African ingredients like fonio to global tables. Led by Brewmaster Garrett Oliver, Brooklyn Brewery has been working with fonio since 2019, paving the way for this remarkable creation.
Fonio Rising exudes a robust and crisp profile, featuring vibrant tropical fruit notes. The beer will be available at Whole Foods Market stores across the U.S. starting early October, and in Brooklyn Brewery’s Williamsburg-based Tasting Room.
Prior to the creation of Fonio Rising, fonio has been featured in a number of limited releases. Last year, Brooklyn Brewery and Yolele’s first partnership, Brooklyn Brewery x Yolélé Fonio White Beer, was released regionally in the U.S., as was the Brewery’s collaboration with Run The Jewels, a beer dubbed 36” Chain.
Stone, Rad Beer Co. collab on IPA for Punk in the Park-ing Lot pre-party
Leading up to the third annual Punk In The Park on November 4 & 5 (led by SoCal punk legends Pennywise, Descendents, Circle Jerks and Goldfinger) at Oak Canyon Park in Orange County, CA, there is the official Punk In The Park-ing Lot pre-party, held October 14 at Rad Beer Co. in Anaheim, CA.
Punk In The Park-ing Lot will also celebrate the release of Punk In The Park West Coast IPA, a collaboration between Stone Brewing and Rad Beer Co. Cans of the 6.3% ABV and 45 IBU Punk In The Park West Coast IPA will be available to purchase at the brewery during the pre-party, and the beer will be available at the November 4 & 5 festival.
“The reason I got into craft beer was because of Stone Brewing. I remember back before Brew Ha Ha Productions even existed, we would drive down to Carlsbad from OC to stock up on Stone Pale Ale, IPA and Arrogant Bastard because it wasn’t available up north yet,” says Event producer Cameron Collins of Brew Ha Ha Productions. “We’ve had an incredible relationship with Stone for so many years and now as one of the owners at Rad Beer Co., doing a collaboration for Punk In The Park together is literally a dream come true. One of my business partners and brewer extraordinaire at Rad Beer, Dylan Mobley, got his start as a professional brewer in San Diego at Stone. This beer is another kick ass collaboration and I am so stoked for everyone to try it!”
Punk In The Park West Coast IPA is brewed with pure Idaho malted barley, Nelson Sauvin, Citra and featuring Phantasm. Phantasm is produced from Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc grape skins which are very high in thiols. It’s fermented with Thiolized yeast, which is designed to utilize thiols present in hops, and Phantasm to produce huge tropical fruit notes.
The Park-ing Lot special event is open to all ages and will feature performances from Manic Hispanic, all-star Punk Rock Karaoke and The Gringoz, as well as guest DJ sets. Band members expected to be in attendance for Punk In The Park-ing Lot include: Fletcher Dragge and Randy Bradbury (Pennywise), Greg Hetson (Circle Jerks / ex-Bad Religion), Stan Lee (The Dickies), and skateboard legend Steve Caballero among others.
