Greeley, Colorado’s Wiley Roots Brewing Co. is bringing back its Apumpalyptica brands in a big way this year. Undead Apumpalyptica, Undead Apumpalyptica Pecan, and Undead Apumpalyptica Pumpkin Spiced Latte are all being released on Sept. 22, 2023, on-tap at the brewery and in 12 oz four-packs to-go with limited distribution.
“It’s been fun to see pumpkin beers doing so well again,” said Miranda Carbaugh, Co-Owner and Chief Operations Officer. “It’s been over seven years since we released the last batch of Apumpalyptica and we’re really excited it’s back. It’s one of those beers that people have been asking about, so we thought it was time. We made some changes to the original recipe by making it bigger, maltier, and darker, with tons of caramel and toffee flavors to match the monster spice profile that I think people are going to love, even if they don’t like barleywines or pumpkin spice beers. It’s a great beer to introduce to a new group of people that want to find something different than what is out there, something unique and special.”
Undead Apumpalyptica is a full flavored 11% ABV barleywine style ale packed with cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice, perfect for colder nights. The recipe was resurrected from the brewery’s discontinued fan favorite, Apumpalyptica, a beer that was last released in the fall of 2016.
Undead Apumpalyptica Pecan adds toasted pecan to the recipe, while Undead Apumpalyptica Pumpkin Spiced Latte adds cold brewed coffee and marshmallow to the base recipe. The brewery announced on Facebook and Instagram that the beer was “back from the dead” and has a “bigger and bolder flavor with a maltier base from over 30 hours of boiling.”
Empyrean Brewing commemorates third hockey season with year-round release
Lincoln, Nebraska’s Empyrean Brewing Co. is commemorating its third season at Lincoln Stars hockey games. The launch of Goal Line Amber Ale 16-oz. cans also marks the first time it will be available year-round, and not just at Lincoln’s Ice Box. It is also the first time Empyrean will be packaged in a 4-pack yoke in lieu of a box.
The partnership between Empyrean Brewing Co. and the Lincoln Stars began in 2021 when the Stars started offering craft beer at home games. Aside from Goal Line, other Empyrean beers at the Ice Box include a variety of seasonals and limiteds, along with three core beers: SunSlinger XPA, Watch Man IPA and Mind Over Mango IPA.
“We’re very proud of this partnership with the Lincoln Stars,” says Ben Matya, sales and marketing manager at Empyrean Brewing Co. “Having local beer at a local US Hockey League (USHL) is part of what makes home games so special—experiencing what you’re only able to do right here in Lincoln, Nebraska. We’re excited to continue this relationship with the Stars and look forward to many more exciting things to come.”
Tröegs brings back Master — Master! — Master of Pumpkins
Tröegs Independent Brewery puts out one of our favorite fall seasonals — Master of Pumpkins — which involves sourcing over 3,000 pounds of locally grown Pennsylvania longneck pumpkins to be used in the beer.
“To us, a pumpkin beer should have pumpkin,” says brewmaster and co-founding brother John Trogner. “We’re a Pennsylvania brewery, and pumpkins grow really well here, so using Pennsylvania pumpkins just makes sense. Our fans definitely appreciate the connection to local agriculture.”
After the harvest, brewery staff clean, cut, roast, and purée each pumpkin before adding them directly to the mash tun at the start of the brewing process. Weighing in at 7.5% ABV, the once-a-year beer is subtly spiced with cinnamon, clove, ginger, and nutmeg.
Braxton Brewing brews the dessert of the fall with Cinci ice cream staple
Cinciannati, Ohio’s Braxton Brewing Co. has once again teamed up with Graeter’s Ice Cream, a 153-year-old, family-owned craft ice cream company, to offer their popular seasonal Graeter’s Pumpkin Pie Ale. Braxton Brewing Co. will bring beer drinkers an adult-friendly beverage that rings in the fall season with rich, warm notes of pumpkin reminiscent of Graeter’s classic seasonal Pumpkin Ice Cream.
Braxton’s Pumpkin Pie Ale celebrates the season of fall and the community’s love for both Braxton Brewing Co. and Graeter’s Ice Cream. In mimicking the nostalgic flavors found in a slice of pumpkin pie, it features notes of pumpkin pie spice, as well as hints of pie crust. Consumers will notice the ale’s bold aroma, which brings about feelings of the fall season, as well as a deep brown color from the pour.
Original 40 Brewing releases Fresh Hop Special Lager this weekend
San Diego’s The Original 40 Brewing Company will release Fresh Hop Special Lager on Saturday at its North Park brew pub. The Czech-style beer was made in collaboration with North Park neighbor Seek Beer Company and Del Mar’s Viewpoint Brewing Company.
Fresh Hop Special Lager has a 5.8% alcohol by volume (ABV), and it was brewed with Centennial hops that were fresh picked and overnighted from Crosby Hop Farms in Woodburn, Ore. to use on brew day. Saaz hops, which come from the town of Žatec in the Czech Republic, were also used.
The beer, which will be available on draft and in four packs of 16-oz. cans, was fermented with a Czech lager yeast strain before the hops were added. Fresh Hop Special Lager has a smooth biscuit and light honey malt character, but it finishes dry.
“I couldn’t be happier to welcome the fall season with this latest creation with Seek and Viewpoint that is reminiscent of German Festbiers, but not a malt bomb by any means,” said Original 40 Head Brewer Zack Kaplan. “Being a lighter style, the hops stand out more than they would a traditional fresh hop IPA or heavier style. But it’s very much drinkable and super enjoyable.”
Saturday also marks Original 40’s 3rd-Annual Oktoberfest Games in honor of the annual German beer-drinking celebration. Beginning at 3:00 p.m., four different competitions will be held, including Best Lederhosen and Drindl Outfits, Bavarian Pretzel Eating Contest, Stein Holding Competition, and Partner Pretzel Toss. Gift cards will be awarded to the winners.
Huss Brewing celebrates a ferret that refuses to go extinct
Huss Brewing Co. is debuting an exclusive beer at The Phoenix Zoo that will benefit the Black-Footed Ferret, which was thought to be extinct — twice! The Phoenix Zoo is one of only six black-footed ferret breeding facilities in the world.
As one of the main local brands represented at the zoo, Huss was asked to make a beer to champion the efforts the Phoenix Zoo has in conservation of endangered species. Huss plans to feature a new native species every four months that will accommodate the season and help champion the many conservation efforts of the Phoenix Zoo.
“Our goals with the Brewers Conservation Series of beers are to use the beer and the cans to highlight the conservation efforts of the Phoenix Zoo and to bring awareness to animals that are endangered,” said Huss founder Leah Huss.
The Black-Footed Ferret IPA will be available starting on Sunday, October 1 and can only be found at the zoo. It is an unfiltered IPA offered in cans and on tap. Six-packs will also be available for to-go purchase from the Phoenix Zoo Gift Shop.
