Denver’s River North Brewery continues its international award winning streak with recent wins in Japan, Brussels, Nashville (World Beer Cup) and now Australia. River North took one gold and two silver medals in Australia’s largest beer competition, the Australian International Beer Awards. The winning beers included some of the brew team’s favorite beers: Bucket of Bolts (Gold), Midnight Hike (Silver), and Snowburn (Silver).
Founded in 2012, River North has continued to earn a name for itself with its intense imperial stouts, barleywines, and barrel aged beers of all varieties. Just last month, the brewery took home two medals at the World Beer Cup, held this year in Nashville. World Beer Cup is the largest beer competition in the world, making River North Brewery’s gold and bronze medal wins the most prestigious in the brewery’s eleven year history. The brewery earned a gold medal for its fan-favorite Midnight Hike imperial chocolate porter and a bronze medal for Snowburn wheatwine, a wintertime staple at its Denver taprooms.
Over in the Brussels Beer Challenge, the brewery earned two silver medals and one gold. One of the brewery’s most well known beers, Nightmare Fuel, which first debuted in 2015, took gold in the coffee beer category. Barrel Aged Bucket of Bolts and Midnight Hike followed up with silver. 2022 makes for a repeat win across the Atlantic for River North. The brewery earned a bronze for Milk Chocolate Mr. Sandman at the Brussels Beer Challenge in 2021.
Other notable wins came at the Japan International Beer Cup last October with six awards: Hello Darkness, Midnight Hike, Adrift on the Baltic, Bucket of Bolts, Twilight Hike, and Sunburn all getting recognition as exceptional examples of their styles.

Upslope special bottle release pays homage to the wild
Upslope Brewing Co. and Boulder Open Space Conservancy are hosting a special bottle release and food pairing event on June 22: Open Space Terroir Project. Inspired by hikes in Boulder Open Space & Mountain Parks and the indigenous plants and microorganisms all around us, Upslope Head Brewer Alex Meyer first foraged seasonal flowers, conifer needles, and grasses on and around Upslope’s Boulder breweries in the spring of 2019.
Using the indigenous yeast and bacteria on the foraged plants as catalysts for fermentation, this wild inoculated beer is a blend of three vintages over the course of three years. Each vintage was fermented in oak barrels, then conditioned in the bottle for an additional year.
A collaboration with Boulder Open Space Conservancy, Open Space Terroir Project pays homage to the wild, unpredictable, natural spaces around us in our beautiful backyard of Boulder, Colorado. As part of this partnership with BOSC, we will be donating 10% of Open Space Terroir Project sales to BOSC to help them protect, enhance, preserve, and steward Boulder’s legacy of open space and mountain parks for current and future generations.
