Maui Brewing announces medals and Kihei groundbreaking

Maui Brewing Co. has been busy, making tasty Hawaiian-inspired craft beer, winning awards for said island beer and working on its new production facility. First off, Maui Brewing Co. (or MBC for short) just announced it was honored with seven medals in the last few months. The awards included beers entered at the Ameri-CAN Canned Craft Beer Fest, the Los Angeles International Commercial Beer Competition and the U.S. Open Beer Championship.

CoCoNut PorTeR, MBC’s flagship beer, won one gold and one silver medal in Fruit, Vegetable & Specialty Beer categories. Bikini Blonde Lager was awarded two silver medals and Mana Wheat one. MBC’s fall 2012 limited release beer, Liquid Breadfruit, was awarded a bronze medal in the indigenous beer category. Additionally, MBC was awarded a Most Sustainable Brewer Award by HPE.

While MBC celebrates these achievements, work is underway on the new production facility in Kihei — groundbreaking is expected July 24 and construction begins on July 29. This location will allow MBC the opportunity to continue to invest in the community, creating new jobs and developing a sustainable manufacturing industry. The new facility will have an initial capacity of approximately 50,000 barrels (bbls).

MBC touts itself as a truly Hawaiian brewery, proudly making 100 percent of its beer, canned and draft, in Hawaii. Recognized as Hawaii’s No. 1 craft beer since 2005, the company said, it has a strong commitment to the local economy and the environment. MBC beers are packaged with eco-friendly materials. Cans are manufactured on Oahu and designed by local Maui artists. Plastic rings are dangerous to marine life and therefore, a unique, recyclable plastic carrying device is used to hold the cans. The spent grain from beer production is donated to local ranchers for cattle feed and composting. MBC is also very active in several local Hawaiian charities.
