Fat Tire, now a brand unto itself, and L39ION of Los Angeles released a collaborative, limited-edition golden ale to benefit the Grow Cycling Foundation. Partners since 2019 through a shared stewardship for cycling, the two brands aim to strengthen social action within the cycling community with L39ION X Fat Tire Golden Ale.
With a dream to promote diversity and representation in the sport of cycling, L39ION founders Justin and Cory Williams set out on a mission to challenge outdated ideas, destroy boundaries, and pave the way for a more inclusive cycling community—all while assembling one of the winningest teams in road racing history.
Today, L39ION and Fat Tire are combining bikes and beer for a shared goal.
“At Fat Tire, we’ve watched firsthand as L39ION of Los Angeles has shaken up the cycling world,” said Taylor Boyd, Fat Tire Brand Manager. “As the team continues to dominate crit racing in the US, they are bringing more participants and spectators into the sport. We believe in and support L39ION’s mission to break down barriers as they help build a more inclusive community for all cyclists.”
Label artwork for the beer incorporates design elements taken directly from the team’s distinct, signature jerseys. With direct input from the L39ION team, and long days on the bike in mind, this collaborative beer is purpose-brewed with lemon peel and sea salt for post-ride consumption. Proceeds from every can of L39ION X Fat Tire Golden Ale sold will benefit the Grow Cycling Foundation in support of their work providing education, access, and opportunities that promote diverse representation and equity in cycling.
“Fat Tire is a tremendous partner to L39ION of Los Angeles and a staple in our team’s podium celebrations,” says Justin Williams. “I cherish the memories we’ve created together while riding with communities across the country, and my team and I have spent a considerable amount of time researching the perfect beverage to enjoy after rides. The legendary brewers at Fat Tire welcomed our input and produced the L39ION golden ale. We couldn’t be more excited to share this refreshing ale and benefit the Grow Cycling Foundation’s important work of promoting diversity in cycling.”
Run the Jewels and Brooklyn Brewery launch a Double Pils
Run The Jewels and Brooklyn Brewery have launched another collaborative brew. Featuring artwork created by label design contest winner Matt C. Harvey, 36” Chain is a satisfyingly snappy double pilsner made with fonio, an ancient West African grain renowned for its resilience and unique flavor. It has golden notes of lychee with light honey, an assertively crisp finish, and pairs well with many of Run the Jewels’ favorite foods and activities: bagels, lemon pepper wings, cheesy grits, burgers and fries, and, of course, loud music.
Special 36” Chain limited edition merchandise, including hats and pint glasses will also be available for sale, starting August 8.
“Run the Jewels are a band who are out there with an edge and a message, so we definitely didn’t want to just phone this one in,” explains Brooklyn Brewery’s James Beard Award-winning brewmaster Garrett Oliver. “ When I met with the band, I joked that I wanted to make a “tactical pilsner” – a beer that “tastes like beer”, but has some refreshing bite and fruitiness that comes from the use of fonio. And it’s a little bit strong because nothing RTJ does is light!
In keeping with Run the Jewels’ commitment to putting money back into the communities where their beers are made, a portion of proceeds from the sale of 36” Chain will be donated to the Red Hook Art Project, (R.H.A.P). The organization’s mission is “rooted in the conviction that creative self-expression is a transformative experience that enriches individuals and communities.”
Roadhouse Brewing’s musically inspired series continues with Mountain Jam Vol. 8
Roadhouse Brewing Co. introduces Mountain Jam Vol. 8 (6.8% ABV), the latest in its ongoing series of musically-inspired brews. A smooth and juicy Hazy IPA, Mountain Jam Vol. 8 was created in partnership with the celebrated bluegrass-influenced Americana band Railroad Earth.
“The best way I can describe this beer is tropical fruit punch. Red fruits, mango and papaya. Subtle hints of strawberry and coconut – but not in an overpowering synthetic sun tan lotion way – shine through along with a bit of passionfruit,” says Max Shafer, Roadhouse Brewmaster. “This beer is velvety smooth and has a wildly unique flavor and mouthfeel of which I am attributing to the Talus and the Cashmere hops.”
“This is one of our favorite projects every year. Each year we get to connect with a new band that we think truly matches our ideals of what it means to Live Deep. This year was no different. Pairing with Railroad Earth on our Mountain Jam 8 beer collaboration just made perfect sense,” says Roadhouse Co-Founder Colby Cox.
Our Mutual Friend releasing Lava Loop in 12 ounce cans
Our Mutual Friend Brewing Company (OMF) will release a variety of new beers in August, including a 12-ounce option for Lava Loop, an Imperial Mexican Chocolate Stout, and a refreshing spritz beer collaboration with American Solera Brewery.
Lava Loop, is a 10% ABV Imperial Mexican Chocolate Stout brewed with Ecuadorian Cacao Nibs. “This is a complex but balanced beer with rich dark chocolate and vanilla notes and flavors of cinnamon and roasted chiles,” says OMF Head Brewer Jan Chodkowski. “The 12-ounce format makes it a much more palatable culinary-inspired beer that you’ll want to pair with Horchata ice cream.”
Tröegs ready to don its lederhosen
Tröegs Independent Brewing is ready to release its Oktoberfest Lager. Interpreting this timeless German style starts with a traditional brewing technique called decoction.
“By boiling a portion of the mash, we create a bright, dry maltiness,” says brewmaster and co-founding brother, John Trogner.
A kettle addition of Hallertau Tradition hops adds subtle floral and herbal undercurrents. Ringing in at 6.1% ABV, this toasty lager boasts notes of sweet caramel, fresh-baked bread, and flowering herbs.
To capture the celebratory spirit of the annual Oktoberfest celebration, Tröegs employed German artist David Leutert, who took inspiration from the Bavarian flag and traditional beer halls known as “Festzelte,” or “beer tents”.
Hi-Wire Brewing is too
Hi-Wire Brewing’s Zirkusfest Oktoberfest Lager has returned bigger, brighter, and better than ever in six-packs of 16-ounce cans with a festive new yellow, blue, and white design. This annual fall seasonal release brought home the 2016 Gold Medal in the Great American Beer Festival’s German-style Märzen category for the Asheville, North Carolina-based brewery, and the award-winning recipe (6% ABV) remains the same today.
Rich Munich malt from Bamberg, Germany’s Weyermann Specialty Malts elicits biscuit and honey flavors at the forefront that cascade into a light, dry finish. Six-packs of 16-ounce cans are available from now until October across Hi-Wire Brewing’s nine state distribution footprint as well as the brewery’s nine taproom locations spread throughout the Southeast.
Make that three
Ska Brewing’s Oktoberfest was late to the German lager party when they first debuted this beer in 2018, but they quickly made up for lost time in accolades. The first batch of Oktoberfest that came out in a can earned a gold medal at Great American Beer Festival in the Vienna-style Lager category that year, and has since been honored at the European Beer Star and The Stockholm Beer and Whiskey Festival.
Made with all-European Munich and Vienna malts and classic German lagering techniques, this autumnal amber-brown beauty is nutty, bready, and toasty with a clean, neutral yeast flavor on the finish. The 2022 batch is scaled up to allocate more draft and canned 6-packs across Ska’s national markets for the fall season, too.
