Game of Thrones is a television phenomenon. Fueled by excellent writing and heart-breaking plot twists (not to mention graphic sex and violence), the HBO series’ popularity has reached monumental heights, most recently spawning an awesome viral video of viewer reactions to the now infamous “red wedding.” The back-stabbing, dragon-birthing series has also crossed over to craft beer as Brewery Ommegang and HBO partnered to produce a Game of Thrones-inspired beer, which was released last March.
While the show just ended its third season, the Brewery Ommegang is gearing up to launch its second Game of Thrones-inspired beer — Take the Black Stout. The label touts the beer as a stout “as dark as winters that once engulfed Westeros, as robust as the men who swear their oaths at the weirwood tree.”
“No one enjoys their job more than I do — producing and developing new brews to delight lovers of fine beer, add to that the opportunity to collaborate on a beer based on the cultural phenomenon of Game of Thrones and exploring ways to make the beer truly reflect aspects from the show,” said Phil Leinhart, brewmaster at Brewery Ommegang, upon the release of the first Game of Thrones beer, Iron Throne. “It made us approach development in a completely new way and I think the first edition Iron Throne reveals that. With a Lannister currently on the throne, it made sense to do a delicate, but piercing Golden Blonde Ale with Noble hops. Iron Throne is certainly fair in color and soft in appearance, yet it still possesses a complexity and bite to be on guard for.”
As sure as a Lannister always pays his debts, Craft Brewing Business editors will continue on the quest for unique and exciting craft beer news.
