It’s cool when craft breweries do things to support the environment. We constantly give them kubos on this website. New Belgium Brewing Co. is always popping up on my radar for embracing its greener side. In 2020, New Belgium’s Fat Tire brand became America’s first certified carbon neutral beer, and it’s become a major marketing point for the Kirin-owned craft brewery. Read this letter via CEO Steve Fechheimer about his passion for the project. Here’s a summary from a recent press release:
In 2020, Fat Tire became America’s first certified carbon neutral beer. From the barley field to the brewhouse to the beer aisle — Fat Tire is Certified Carbon Neutral by SCS Global Services. Earning and maintaining this high-integrity certification not only requires that we offset our footprint using the highest quality carbon offsets on the market, but that we disclose our footprint and directly reduce our emissions every single year. By 2030, we plan all of New Belgium’s beers to be certified carbon neutral.
Coinciding with the Super Bowl this past weekend, New Belgium launched IsMyBeerSustainable.com showing us whether the biggest brands in beer are also carbon neutral. Well, are they? No one really knows I guess, but probably not. Every brand summary on the IsMyBeerSustainable.com portal (besides Fat Tire) currently starts with: “We’re not sure!”
From the press release:
Today, we’re launching IsMyBeerSustainable.com so consumers who care about how climate solutions and beer intersect can find out if popular brews are certified carbon neutral. We’ll update the site as these brands announce certification, and we’re also letting the beer industry know we’ll be sharing our Fat Tire carbon neutral blueprint with any company looking to take this crucial next step. As a medium-sized craft brewer, we only can have a small impact. We need the biggest beer companies to join us in order to achieve real impact and show beer drinkers what we can do if we work together.
I guess I’ll let you know if anyone finds out, but you know, probably not.
