Sure, when I get an email from “AmericanMarijuana,” I’m at least clicking to see what’s up. Turns out it’s an online medical marijuana educational resource, and the group launched a survey targeting ~2,100 U.S. consumers asking about their preferences in that modern day Sophie’s Choice between alcohol and weed. They got me. I’m curious.
Back when legalization was first starting, there were a lot of think-pieces being written about how legal weed could / would / wouldn’t compete with craft beer. Seems like no one is talking about that any more (is there something else going on?), but maybe we should be? There are some interesting nugs of info from this survey.
What stood out most to me is how some of alcohol’s biggest virtues are somewhat fickle/precarious: Among those that prefer alcohol, 39.3% choose it because it’s cheaper where they live compared to 35.9% of the survey takers who choose alcohol over weed on account of weed being illegal where they live.
Alcohol does seem to win in the moderation category, with nearly 40 percent of those who like it citing the fact that they can more easily adjust the amount they are consuming / controlling it, whereas weed is going to get you high.
That maybe leads into the biggest negative on the weed side: 44.8% of weed smokers admitted to driving while under the influence compared to 26.6% of beer drinkers.
There’s more, but I’m hungover and tired of typing (which nearly 60 percent of weed smokers cite as the reason they prefer it over alcohol!), so you’ll need to click over and check it out for yourself. It’s fun to scroll through. Do something fun today. You’ve earned it.
