St. Louis-based Barry-Wehmiller Companies is a global manufacturing, supplier and engineering consultant with a focus on the packaging, corrugating, sheeting and paper-converting industries. This is a $3 billion organization with nearly 12,000 team members, and more than 3,000 of those working for the BW Packaging Systems platform. Among its expansive portfolio, BW Packaging has a lot of cool packaging products for the craft beverage industry under its Pneumatic Scale Angelus (PSA) brand. In addition to high speed beverage lines, PSA specializes in integrated canning systems for the craft beverage industry, with speeds from 15 to 250 plus cans per minute (cpm). Under the Packaging Systems umbrella, BW Integrated Systems also offers end-of-line equipment.

“Pneumatic Scale Angelus has been very active in the craft brewing space, and we know this has been a challenging time for many small brewers,” said Gigi Lorence, global marketing director at PSA. “We’re hopeful the information we’re providing will help them define their path forward, as so many are reevaluating and reinventing their business models in response to the shutdowns. We believe canning offers them an element of autonomy that can be game-changing, and it’s a privilege to help them succeed.”
Launched last week and continuing through May 2021, BW Packaging Systems will host a unique online exhibit space to showcase the collective packaging capabilities of Barry-Wehmiller’s packaging companies — Accraply, BW Flexible Systems, BW Integrated Systems, Synerlink and (yep) Pneumatic Scale Angelus. Registration to enter the virtual exhibit hall is free by invitation or via the link on bwpackagingsystems.com, and access will be available 24 hours a day, seven days a week for attendees. The virtual exhibit hall — organized into market showrooms — will feature information, including videos and case studies, on more than 80 machines and solutions for seven key markets — from pet food to craft beverages. When considering the latter, definitely take a look at PSA’s canning lines.
“Currently, our portfolio includes two inline canning systems, which integrate filling and seaming into one system — our CB50F that fills up to 50 cpm and our CB100F that is capable of up to 100 cpm — roughly 20 cpm more than our nearest competitor,” said Lorence. “Be sure to take a look at the New Realm and Heavy Seas videos for testimonials from Mitch Steele and Dan Kopman, two of craft brewing’s industry patriarchs. We’re very proud of the opportunities we’ve had to work with them.”
In addition to the CB50F and CB100F, PSA is about to unveil a third inline system using counter-pressure technology for higher carbonation beverages. That line isn’t in the virtual exhibit hall just yet, but it will be in the very near term.
“Finally, our rotary line, the CB244 is intended for brewers who are ready to take the next step to increase production without large increases in overall footprint,” explained Lorence. “The CB244 will fill up to 250 cpm but can also be configured with an additional eight or 16 filling heads that can take the final output to over 400 cpm.”
Of course, it’s not just canning systems. Digital visitors can peruse Angelus V-Series can seamers, Pneumatic Scale/Hema Quatro electronic rotary fillers, Synerlink form-fill-seal and fill-seal cup and bottle machines, Accraply labelers, CARR Centritech centrifuge separation systems and a whole lot more.
“PSA also offers several different canning lines,” suggested Lorence. “These lines use the same industry-leading Angelus can seaming technology as our high-speed beverage lines but scaled for the needs of craft beverage with one seaming head, and our filling technology uses a proprietary flowmeter design that results in the lowest dissolved oxygen in the industry.”
Sounds like it’s worth checking out. In addition, other cool product launches will be introduced throughout the year via the same online platform. BW Packaging Systems experts aim to use this virtual space to demonstrate technology and collaborate with attendees. Registrants are encouraged to visit the virtual exhibit hall frequently and watch for e-mail updates announcing new offerings.
