It was a day like any other. About to drive home after a relaxing weekend by the lake when — uh oh — car doesn’t start. Then, the trunk pops open (?) and the car alarm starts and refuses to turn off. A madness swiftly descends, consuming all good vibes in its path. Bleak end times were dawning. Just as the reaper appeared to point his bony finger our way, a hero emerged. She remembered we still had beer. Instantly the skies cleared. Sanity restored. The reaper stayed, but just for one before he had to scoot. In beer’s name, we praise.
Here are your craft beers to know this week. Send in your own escapes from madness to [email protected].
Alosta Brewing celebrates 25th anniversary of that one LIVE album
Remember the band Live? Well, it has joined forces with the southern California-based brewing company Alosta Brewing for the creation of the band’s first craft beer “Throwing Copper Ale.” It’s named in honor of the band’s 8X multi-platinum album Throwing Copper which is being celebrated via a 25th anniversary deluxe multi-format reissue out July 19 on Radioactive/MCA/Ume. Throwing Copper Ale is a union of the caramel toffee like sweetness of English barley and the bitterness of Nobel hops.
“Smooth, refreshing. English Ales are often referred to as copper ales, and we could not resist taking the opportunity to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Throwing Copper with Live’s very first craft beer. We present to you Throwing Copper Ale,” the band noted in its press release.
Canton, Ohio’s Royal Docks releases a Pro Football Hall of Fame special edition of its Leatherhead IPA
I live in Canton, Ohio, down the road from the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and Hall of Fame week is a huge deal here. It is surreal actually. Our fairly normal, perfectly adequate yet forgotten Midwestern city is suddenly buzzing with NFL legends and celebrities. Why is my favorite hole in the wall bar packed today? Oh, Terrell Davis is just hanging out there. Anyway, it’s a cool opportunity for Royal Docks Brewing Co.
“This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for a small brewery like ours. I’m really proud of everyone on both of these teams because they have worked so hard to make this happen,” said John Bikis, Cofounder RDBCo. “Having grown up in Canton, I’m really excited about this partnership and the idea that Royal Docks Brewing will forever be a part of the football history that is so important to our area and the state of Ohio.”
To capitalize on the Hall of Fame buzz, Royal Docks will be releasing a Pro Football Hall of Fame Edition of its autumnal favorite, Leatherhead IPA. The beer can will feature special edition artwork and a chance to win a Backyard BBQ with a Pro Football Hall of Famer.
Leatherhead IPA was first released for the 2017 football season. It’s an American IPA inspired by the India pale ales of the United States’ pre-prohibition era that would have been enjoyed around the time that the National Football League was founded in Canton in 1920.
“The original inspiration for this beer was a speech that I heard Hall of Fame President and CEO Dave Baker give when he first came to the Hall of Fame. He talked about these leather-clad heroes from a hundred years ago and how among today’s football heroes he counts the parents who bring their kids to the field and volunteer time and money to teach the values that the game is built upon.” said Royal Docks Brewmaster Dave Sutula. “It’s awesome that we’re able to do this with the Hall of Fame because the beer was always meant as a bridge between football’s storied past and the fans who make the game what it is today,”
Thirsty Monk goes back to back with medals at the 2019 U.S. Open Beer Championship
Thirsty Monk was the proud recipient of two medals at the 2019 U.S. Open Beer Championship on July 9 in Oxford, Ohio. The brewery’s North Carolina location received back-to-back medals in the Belgian and French Ale category, taking home a silver medal for Abby Blonde and a bronze medal for Past Life, a Belgian-Style Amber Ale.
“When I texted home that Abby Blonde had won another medal, the first question six-year-old Abby asked was Gold or Silver? I’m glad I didn’t have to tell her Bronze though I am super proud of our Bronze for Past Life Amber,” said Barry Bialik, Thirsty Monk CEO.
Abby Blonde is a classic Belgian-style Blonde Ale made with Franco-Belges Pilsner malt, wheat and traditional sugar. Weighing in at 7.3 percent ABV, this slightly hazy, golden brew was fermented with Thirsty Monk’s in-house Belgian yeast strain, offering a plethora of flavors including banana and light clove.
Past Life Amber, inspired by Bialik’s legendary past life as a monk and designed to be his partner Shelley’s “perfect beer,” comes in at an approachable 5 percent ABV. Past Life is a smooth, mellow and malty Belgian-inspired amber ale that welcomes entrancing notes of toasted bread, caramel and dried apricot, apple and pear followed by an earthy hop awakening.

Peacemaker Brewing puts the Kill in the Cure with rock duo Jocelyn & Chris Arndt
Upstate New Yorkers, Harvard grads, and next-gen rockers Jocelyn & Chris Arndt have partnered with Canandaigua craft brewery Peacemaker Brewing Co. on a special limited-edition brew dubbed Kill in the Cure IPA. The brainchild of Chris Arndt, his father Ted Arndt, and Peacemaker’s Founder and Chief Brewer Todd Reardon, this limited-run beer will be a hoppy New England IPA (ABV 7 percent) with a juicy bite inspired by Jocelyn & Chris’s new single “Kill in the Cure.” The beer’s slogan? “Kill the pain, cure the blues.”
Brewed and bottled at Peacemakers headquarters in Canandaigua, N.Y., the 16-oz can will be sold at select Wegmans supermarkets and specialty craft brew shops in the region as well as at the Arndts’ shows across upstate New York this summer, including their headline performance at the Brew York Festival (July 20th). Each can will feature a direct Spotify code for their new single “Kill in the Cure,” allowing consumers to immediately listen to the track while enjoying the beverage. “Kill in the Cure” was Billboard’s No. 1 most added song to Triple A Radio in the United States in its first week.
Eurisko Beer Co. And DSSOLVR Release My Little Coconut Hazy Lactose DIPA collab
Asheville’s Eurisko Beer Co. and DSSOLVR released My Little Coconut Hazy Lactose DIPA in June at Eurisko’s South Slope taproom and beer garden. This tiki-inspired double IPA features heavy hop additions of Wakatu, Waimea and Azacca and is infused with navel orange, grapefruit and mandarin zest before taking a well-deserved vacation atop massive amounts of coconut. The result is a deceptively drinkable 8.7-percent ABV juice-bomb celebration of all things summer that will put you solidly on island time without leaving home.
“It’s always a gamble, designing a new recipe that incorporates adjunct ingredients, but the collective expertise shared between Eurisko and DSSOLVR allowed us to dial in the amounts of zest and coconut necessary to perfectly compliment the hoppy backbone we established,” explained Eurisko Owner and Brewmaster Zac Harris. “In the end, we nailed the character we wanted. Just the right amount of those adjuncts to land squarely in that sweet spot.”
