After a concert last week (the IDLES), I got into a conversation with a dude only because I was wearing a Television t-shirt and he liked the band Television. Next thing I know, I’m in a deep conversation with his buddy about music and life. He brings up an IDLES lyric I didn’t notice before that I really dig. Now, every time I hear that song, I think of this random, really cool interaction. Don’t know his name, and he likely was too stoned to remember talking with me, but there he is, in my brain, forever linked to this song. This got me thinking about beer and breweries, of course.
Like that IDLES song, an idle conversation, or the random t-shirt you wear to a concert, the beers you brew are infused with information. There’s the smell, flavor and mouthfeel of the beer, but there’s also the weird Sci-Fi story on your label, the awful cartoon on your BLONDE BOMBSHELL label, the decor of your taproom, that weird Lenny guy who’s always playing pinball in the corner. All of it gets consumed and is imprinted somewhere, in some way, forever. Maybe seeing Lenny at a grocery store five years later reminds someone to stop in again. Or maybe seeing yet another BLONDE BOMBSHELL label makes them punch someone because it is so irritating. All of these outcomes are wrapped up in that initial innocuous transaction. That is cool to me, especially with how many beers are out there to choose at any given moment, with each new beer representing a whole different set of connections and possible futures. Remember when there were hardly any choices and therefore no variety in the tastes and messages being consumed? Anyway, just think about the beer brands you bring to life and the vibes you send into the world because it all goes somewhere.

Holy fuck stains, is it the three-day weekend yet???! How much more gibberish do I need to type to pass the time! Here are your five beers to know this week. Please infuse an email with your new intentions to [email protected]
Able Seedhouse + Brewery’s Slow Motion Car Wash is our best named beer of the week
Founded in 2015, Able Seedhouse + Brewery is a community of creative, hard-working and thoughtful people dedicated to building locally-inspired and ultra-fresh beer located in Northeast Minneapolis. Its latest limited release beer, Slow Motion Car Wash, is a fruit ale that explodes with a big mashup of blackberry, raspberry, peach, cherry and boysenberry. A pile of white wheat softens the beer while the sweetness from the lactose punches up the fruit blend.
Slow Motion Car Wash is designed for porches, patios, parking lots, sunshine and anywhere you can drink a beer in slow motion. Which, for us at CBB, is often during our group high-fives.
Earnest Brew Works brews some strong Turkish coffee
Earnest Brew Works (which doesn’t capitalize the letters in its name, which we editors cannot abide by), is a fast growing Northwest Ohio beer brand. It is set to release CEDAR: Turkish Coffee Stout in June, which clocks in at a massive 13.2% ABV (which wouldn’t have been possible if Ohio didn’t revise its regulations a few years ago). Sold in individual 12-ounce bottles, the EBW team worked to create a custom blend — a perfect balance of coffee and cardamom spice — with Abdul Hammuda from Tiger Bakery (a Toledo institution).
Originating in the Mediterranean region, Turkish Coffee is a strong brew with spice and a touch of sweetness. The aroma gives off that rich blend to the nose. CEDAR appears opaquely black, with a complementary thick body. As you take your fist sip, the mouth-filling, velvety liquid awakes you, reminding you of an expertly prepared Turkish Coffee. The slight sweetness will move you to take another sip. This will be released in 12-ounce bottles, available in select retailers and at earnest brew works (OK, we’ll let the lowercase slide this time).

After a three-year hiatus, Wiley Roots brings back aged-sour Pua Aloalo
Wiley Roots Brewing Co. is bringing back Pua Aloalo, a Mixed Culture Sour Golden with Hawaiian Hibiscus and Vanilla. After three years, the brewery will release Pua Aloalo during their Second Annual Luau weekend, from May 31 – June 2, 2019. The luau will also include live music, special food options, four new beers on site and to-go, and two exclusive beers on-site only.
Kyle Carbaugh, co-owner, brewer, and blender at Wiley Roots said: “This is a very special beer for us; this is only the second time we’ve released this beer and it has been three years since the first release. When we were thinking about crafting the second release of this beer, we wanted to make sure that it was accessible, because we think this beer is truly something special and wanted to make sure as many people could enjoy it as possible. That being said, we used only high quality ingredients (vanilla is damn expensive!) to make this beer exactly the way we wanted.”
Pua Aloalo was aged in stainless steel for over two years. While some beers benefit from aging on wood with the introduction of oak tannins and slow oxygen ingress, Wiley Roots said that Pua Aloalo was aged in stainless steel so that no additional flavors or compounds were added to the beer. Pua Aloalo will be available for pre-sale online May 27, 2019 at 10 a.m. with a limit of 3 bottles per person.
