Sunday is Mother’s Day, and if you’re anything like me, you’re struggling to find just the right way to say “Hey, thanks for that whole bringing me into this world and raising me business. Pretty cool of you. You are a superior being to whom I am eternally grateful.” It is impossible to sum it all up. Especially because the best funny cards are already gone. You shouldn’t have spent so much time in the beer aisle. But hey, at least you remembered (thanks Mother’s Brewing). Maybe next year, instead of being an unprepared jerk, you’ll read Five Beers to Know first to save some time.
Circle Brewing Co. partners with Equality Texas for special Pride Can release
The crew at Circle Brewing Co. have designed a new label for their summer seasonal, Fanny Pack Kolsch. This rainbow beer can label takes a positive stance against discrimination towards LGBTQ Austinites and creates a celebration of the progress Equality Texas has made through their work to create a Texas where all are valued. Equality Texas works to secure full equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer Texans through education, organizing, and advocacy.
Starting in June, Circle Brewing Co. will donate $1 to Equality Texas for every case of Fanny Pack Kolsch sold. The beer will be sold in major grocery stores, liquor stores, and convenience stores throughout Austin.
“The way we present ourselves is congruent with our brand and what we believe in as a business and personally,” said co-owner of Circle Brewing Co., Ben Sabel. “Fanny Pack has always been a fun and lively beer for us in the market and we were so thrilled to work with an amazing organization that is fighting for equality. Branding and marketing are a type of art form and we wanted to marry the label with what we believe in and what we stand for. We care about an inclusive environment for those drinking our beer.”
Rusty Rail Brewing partners with Sheetz for this new Coffee IPA

Available in four-packs for a select time in 55 Sheetz stores across Pennsylvania, the beer will first be available to the public at a launch party on May 16, 2019 in Pittsburgh. Brewed with Sheetz Brothers Sumatra coffee beans, the new IPA blend features light and floral taste notes with a subtle coffee presence.
“We are lucky to collaborate with Rusty Rail Brewing Company, a well-known brewery born in central Pennsylvania, to create this limited-edition craft beer,” said Ryan Sheetz, AVP of Brand at Sheetz. “We have worked for years to make beer available in our store locations across Pennsylvania and now, with beer in more than 140 stores across the state, we are excited to take the next step in this journey.”
Superhero Collaboration Beer debuts on Free Comic Book Day with Odyssey Beerwerks, Odd13 Brewing, Cannonball Creek
To celebrate their shared love of comic books, Odyssey Beerwerks, Odd13 Brewing, and Cannonball Creek Brewing teamed up and brewed a pale ale called 3 Superheroes Walk Into A Brewery. The three debuted the beer last weekend on Free Comic Book Day.
“Two of my greatest passions in life are beer and comic books,” says Chris Hill of Odyssey Beerwerks, a man of our own heart. “Getting to combine the two, in collaboration with friends at two other well respected breweries who share the same passions, is something we’ve talked about doing for a long time.”
“This beer is loaded with Amarillo, Galaxy, and Sabro hops, giving it supercharged floral, tropical, and citrus characteristics,” says Ryan Scott of Odd13 Brewing. “It’s a pale ale with extra special hop powers.”
“Beer and comic books have a symbiotic relationship,” says Jason Stengl of Cannonball Creek Brewing. “Both are forms of art and expression, and both have a little something for everyone.”
Heavy Seas Beer set to release its first sour
Next up in the the “Uncharted Waters” series by Heavy Seas Beer is Red Flag, Barrel Aged Sour Ale. This beer will be available in both 4 packs of 12oz bottles and draft throughout the Heavy Seas distribution footprint starting in June.
Red Flag is the first sour offering in the Uncharted Waters series. Brewed in the classic Flemish Red style, Red Flag is brewed in small batches on Heavy Seas’ 15 bbl brewhouse. Each batch is aged in stainless and then moved to bourbon and red wine barrels for further maturing. The barrels are then hand selected and blended to create the most complex and seductive sour ale possible. Deep ruby in color, this barrel aged sour ale delights with sweet malt tones, complex fruit undertones, and a deliciously tart finish.
“We are very excited about Red Flag, as it is the first barrel aged beer we’ve produced with wild yeast and bacteria,” says Heavy Seas Brewmaster, Christopher Leonard. “Red Flag is inspired by the tart, dry, Sour Red and Brown ales of Flanders. Ultimately, it will be a blend of six different batches of “sour” beer aged in 4 different “styles” of barrels. It’s been quite a complicated, but exciting process. Blending all of these similar but different barrels and “fresh beer” to create one dynamic, complex, mysterious, funky, tart offering has been an amazing journey for us. And, as a bonus, we will be holding on to some of the beer in barrels to allow for some fun, interesting blending down the road. We don’t yet know when or how, but I have no doubt we’ll find a way to use these in more fascinating projects in the future!”
Karl Strauss strums a new IPA with Taylor Guitars
ReGreen Brut IPA is part of an annual, rotational IPA series from Karl Strauss Brewing Co. brewed in collaboration with Taylor Guitars to raise awareness for local environmental initiatives. These beers aim to “ReGreen” the community and partner with organizations that aid in these worthy causes. This year’s edition is brewed in support of local non-profit Friends of Balboa Park and their Trees to Treasures program, which helps to maintain the precious tree canopy in Balboa Park.
“We are tremendously grateful to Karl Strauss and Taylor Guitars for their continued partnership with Friends of Balboa Park to support their mission of giving back to local environmental causes,” says John Bolthouse, Friends of Balboa Park Executive Director. “There is nothing more ‘San Diego’ than craft beer and Balboa Park, so putting those two iconic things together to create a unique craft brew and support local trees is a wonderful cause we hope everyone can get behind.”
Karl Strauss and Taylor Guitars celebrated the arrival of ReGreen Brut IPA with a Release Party on April 26. Not only was this the first opportunity to taste the beer, but the event featured appearances from Bob Taylor, Karl Strauss Brewmaster of R&D Paul Segura, and live performances by Birdy Bardot and The Midnight Pine. If only someone would have told you about it sooner, you wouldn’t have missed it like a jerk. Whoops!
