The Master Brewers Certificate Program from UC Davis Continuing and Professional Education is a unique, 15-week program that provides an in-depth understanding of brewing science and brewery engineering, preparing students to enter the industry with the potential to rise to the highest levels of leadership. Major topics covered in brewing science include malting, mashing, brewing, fermentation and finishing, while the brewery engineering subject matter focuses on fluid flow, heat and mass transfer, solid-liquid separation and more. Students explore these two fields through professional-level equivalents of UC Davis degree-program courses and expand their brewing knowledge through assigned reading and writing exercises and visits to breweries in northern California.
Applications for the 2020 program are now being accepted.
The objective of the Master Brewers Certificate Program is to enable students to become knowledgeable, thoughtful, accomplished and professional practical brewers who are eagerly sought by employers in today’s brewing industry.
“I owe where I am to the Master Brewers Program. It really helped get me on a career path, not just a job, a lifelong brewing career” said founder and brewmaster of Third Space Brewing, Kevin Wright. See Wright’s video above.
One of the unique advantages of the program is the knowledge and experience of the faculty. Led by UC faculty and industry experts, program instructors are world-renowned leaders in their field and have the real-world experience to back it up.
“Brewing great beer is first and foremost a science,” said Jim Brown, Master Brewers Certificate Program instructor and director of fermentation science at UC Davis Continuing and Professional Education. “As instructors, it is our goal to train our students in the complex scientific principles that are unique to brewing. But it is also an art, so we want our passion for the craft to come through in our teaching, as well. This combination of science and art makes our program an impactful — and enjoyable — experience for the next generation of brewers,” Brown said.
Applications are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Class size is limited and early application submission is encouraged. For more information or to apply, call (800) 752-0881, email [email protected] or visit its website.
