Basic brewing analysis continues in this excellent educational series from the American Society of Brewing Chemists (ASBC) and the Brewers Association (BA). Katie Fromuth, lab manager with the Fermentation Science and Technology program at Colorado State University, returns to discuss how digital density meters offer a precise and rapid method for measuring the density of a lot of different liquids, including beer.
These instruments can run from three-digit accuracy to precision six-digit density meters and from handhelds to bench top instruments. When calibrated, cleaned and used according to manufacturer’s instructions, digital density meters can be used to determine the specific gravity of beer and wort. Those specific gravity numbers can then be used to calculate other measurements like real extract and degrees Plato. Now watch Fromuth show you how to properly measure with a digital density meter using ASBC’s beer method 2B.
