The folks at Outside magazine clearly like the way craft breweries treat their employees. The publication has honored four craft brands as great places to get a job in its annual Best Places to Work. While we don’t have summaries of Allagash Brewing Co. or New Belgium Brewing Co. below, Deschutes and Ska sent some nice summaries of their accolades. See the complete list right here.
Deschutes Brewery Recognized in Outside’s Best Places to Work 2017
Deschutes Brewery has been ranked on Outside’s Best Places to Work list for four out of the past five years based on a workplace culture that encourages every employee to have a voice and a direct impact on the company’s success.
“We are a family and employee owned company, so every single person on the team works hard every day to contribute to our success while staying true to the culture that we have valued for the past 29 years,” said Michael LaLonde, president and CEO of Deschutes Brewery. “Striving to balance all our hard work with a healthy lifestyle that takes advantage of our hometown recreation is important and receiving the Outside award again means we’re doing something right. We’re excited to be included.”
Deschutes Brewery was founded in the outdoor recreation mecca of Bend, Ore., where employees enjoy an active lifestyle in the outdoors. From a company cyclocross team to a partnership with local ski hill, Mt. Bachelor, Deschutes Brewery embodies this premise of the Outside award program. Every employee strives to preserve his or her outdoor playground through a commitment to using fewer resources and making continuous improvements to reduce impact on the environment. They do all this while continuing to make damn tasty beer.
The brewery was also selected for the award due to its high ranking for community involvement. Each year, Deschutes Brewery donates $1 per every barrel of beer sold to nonprofits to help fulfill the goal of building a healthier society (amounting more than $300,000 in 2017). In addition, the brewery’s traveling Street Pub program, which visits cities across the United States to bring the pub to the people, has raised more than $1 million dollars during its three-year tour for charity.
Outside’s final selections for the list are based on feedback received through a rigorous two-part employee survey process. The Best Companies group then evaluates each nominated company’s workplace policies, practices, philosophy, systems and demographics. The winning companies are those that value productivity in combination with an active, eco-conscious lifestyle, for a fulfilling experience inside and outside the office. This is Outside’s tenth year providing the Best Places to Work.
Ska Brewing Recognized in Outside’s Best Places to Work 2017
Ska Brewing Co. has been selected as one of Outside’s Best Places to Work 2017. Not only are winning companies great workplaces for employees, but they respect the environment and encourage a balance between work and enjoying life in the great outdoors.
“On the quest to create the best craft beer anywhere, we realize the importance of taking care of our employees and our community,” said Ska CEO and Co-Founder Dave Thibodeau. “We strive to be an employer that our team enjoys coming to work for so they can hone in on their talent, creativity and dedication. Ska would not be what it is today without our incredible cast of characters.”
“Companies from across the country entered a rigorous two-part survey process to make the winning list,” said Jonah Ogles, articles editor at Outside magazine. “The Best Companies Group evaluates each nominated company’s workplace policies, practices, philosophy, systems and demographics. There’s also an employee survey to measure personal experience.”

“With nearly 6,000 craft breweries nationwide, we are honored to be one of four breweries to make the list alongside our friends at Allagash, New Belgium and Deschutes,” said Thibodeau.
Not only does Ska provide an outstanding company culture appealing to its employees, but when it comes to bringing home the bacon, assuming that bacon is made of the world’s best craft beer, nobody does it quite like Ska. From their flavor-packed favorite flagship brews to their ridiculously robust reincarnation libations, Ska’s got the goods.
“In addition to creating and enjoying delicious craft beer, Ska is also proactive when it comes to our health. We have a self-funded health insurance plan and we also offer dental, vision, and a matching 401K plan to round out our benefits package,” said Kristen Muraro, marketing director at Ska. “We also offer our employees on-site yoga classes every week, free entries to local races, discounted ski passes and gym memberships.”
Ska is also very passionate about the community and encourages their employees to give back. Ska pays employees for a set number of hours annually to spend volunteering at local organizations.
