Maine Malt House is the malting arm of the third-generation, family-run Buck Farms in Mapleton, Maine. The company grows its Mapleton pale two-row barley on a quarter of its 1,000 acres and malts the barley by hand in a cool floor-malt fashion. Dig the photo below. The result is a clean, crisp and sweet American two-row pale malt, a solid base for most any style brewski.
Last month, Shipyard Brewing Co. released the video above with Jacob and Joshua Buck, co-founders of Main Malt House, discussing their farm and malt house with Joe Rank, operational manager at Shipyard. Today, about 10 percent of the pale malt used in every batch of Shipyard’s Export Ale is Maine Malt. This year, Shipyard expects to buy about 30,000 lbs of the company’s malt, and about 25 other local breweries use Maine Malt House as well. The Maine Malt House is even in the midst of an expansion, working to increase its capacity by 500 percent. After watching the video above, read the rest of that story from March (below).
