Go East, brave craft brewers. Stone, New Belgium, Sierra Nevada, Deschutes, Ballast Point — nearly all the top craft brands by volume or prestige are setting up shop, brewhouses, restaurants and beer destinations in a handful of towns along the East Coast. Asheville, N.C., aside, most of these beer burgs seem to be in Virginia (read why here) — cities like Richmond, Roanoke and Virginia Beach.
Being from San Diego, Green Flash Brewing Co. seemed naturally to want to be near the beach. Situated on a 9-acre industrial plot of land (15 minutes from the sand and shores by car), Green Flash’s second brewing facility in Virginia Beach is set to open Nov. 13. Check out drone footage of it being built or, hell, here’s a live cam you can watch nearly all day long while you impatiently count down the minutes to launch (image updates about every minute).
Green Flash’s Virginia Beach location will feature a 58,000-sq-ft building to accommodate the 100,000-barrel (bbl) brewing facility. Visitors will be welcomed by a large tasting room and beer garden. An extensive brewery tour program, retail store and on-site private event space will provide customers with plenty of opportunities to drink beer, learn about beer and celebrate whatever event with lots of beer. Folks from V Beach are pretty geeked. From the press release:
“Craft beer lovers and the community as a whole are looking forward to the Green Flash experience,” said Virginia Beach Economic Development Director Warren D. Harris. “Having this world-class craft brewery in our backyard is certainly something to cheer about. Not only will Green Flash serve the East Coast some award-winning beers, but the company has a history of supporting the community in a variety of ways that make a difference in people’s lives
With the official grand opening, the brewery will celebrate with a weekend-long lineup of events, including its third annual Treasure Chest Fest, part of its national initiative to raise money for breast cancer charities. The ticketed event will be hosted on Saturday, Nov. 12, and will be the first opportunity for visitors to explore the new Green Flash East Coast facility, followed by the grand opening celebration that will be open to the public on Nov. 13.
Upon completion, the production facility will provide freight efficiencies that will supply fresh Green Flash beer to the East Coast, immediately passing the savings from regionalized shipping on to the consumer. While the brewery will continue to be headquartered with corporate offices in San Diego, the Virginia Beach facility will serve as the East Coast hub for Green Flash. The tasting room will be family-friendly and feature as many as 30 Green Flash beers on tap, a vast beer garden, food trucks, retail store, extensive brewery tour program and large private-event room and garden. The interior of the brewery’s production floor has been designed to duplicate the operations of their West Coast brewery, with all brew house and fermentation cellar equipment manufactured by Paul Mueller Co. of Springfield, Mo.
Go get a job!
Green Flash is in the process of hiring for both the brewery and tasting room and expects to employ upward of 40 locals when they are fully staffed.
