Cincinnati college to add brewing course

Cincinnati is starting to quietly make a bid as the craft brewing capital of Ohio, which already boasts several other great craft brewing hubs in Columbus and the Cleveland/Akron area. To give it a leg up, at least in terms of meeting demands for new employees and developing the next pipeline of hopeful brewing entrepreneurs, Cincinnati State Technical and Community College will begin offering “BREW 100: Introduction to Craft Beer” in the 2015 fall semester.

According to The Cincinnati Business Courier, this great new course will cover beer history, the different styles of beer and proper techniques for the serving, storing and evaluation of beer. Students will also get hands-on experience developing their own beer with local brewers from Rhinegeist.

The BREW 100 course will come back for the spring semester and be joined by BREW 160, which will focus more on the evaluation of the aroma, taste and finish of beers. The 160-level course will also teach students about the judging systems used by beer competitions.

“Given our history as one of the great centers of American brewing, this is, I think, a welcome rediscovery of one of the region’s great traditions,” Gessell-Streeter said in a news release. “What we’re trying to do here is train students who want to earn a living in this business.”
