NITRO! Are you confident enough to wield its power? We know that crazed look in your eyes. Yes, you’re clearly quite ready. Well, we bestow the power of nitro into your hands. Use it wisely! We believe the futuristic device goes by the name of NitroBrew, a new portable technology that nitrogenates any beer at the point of service, and it’s available for both bars and homebrewers.
Let’s recap nitro: A few years ago, nitro beer was seemingly a Guinness exclusive, but the process of beer nitrogenation and its deliciously creamy results have found a new home in the American craft brewing industry (sorry Dublin). Left Hand Brewing Co. introduced its N2 delicious Milk Stout Nitro at the Great American Beer Festival, which it boasted as the first nitrogenated beer packaged by an American craft brewer. Last week, we wrote about Wasatch Brewery entering the bottled nitro craft beer category with its new release of Polygamy Nitro Porter, making it the second brewery in the country to finesse these tiny bubbles into a bottle. Well now, you can simply nitrogenate any beer you want — from a Miller Light to Dogfish Head 90-minute — or your coffee, or that Mad Max V8 Interceptor you’re building.
“NitroBrew can be used for any beer, including all bottled beers and homebrews,” explained NitroBrew Inventor and 25-year beer industry veteran Murthy Tata. “The NitroBrew Home kit comes with an air compressor, which is the nitrogen source and provides a precise mix of nitrogen and carbon dioxide with every pour. It’s foolproof, and there’s no chance of messing up the beer using the air compressor. The NitroBrew Commercial Bundle does not include an air compressor, as bars and restaurants typically already have a nitrogen source. At bars, gas supply pressure should be set at about 35 psig [2.4 barg].”
Stouts and porters are well suited for NitroBrew, and customers have also liked experimenting with IPAs, said NitroBrew. When folks talk about “nitro,” it’s a reference to the type of gas used in the carbonation process. It means the difference between the creamier nitrogen beers (N2) and their lively, fizzier carbon dioxide (CO2) cousins (get real detailed over here). Each NitroBrew kit includes a kettle, a “discreet charging station” and a small air compressor. NitroBrew is easy to use, dishwasher safe, compact and takes up little storage space — that’s according to NitroBrew.
“The precise balance of nitrogen and carbon dioxide in a nitrogenated beer changes dramatically during transportation and storage. Whether it’s bottled or kegged, it’s impossible for a brewer to control the quality of a nitrogenated beer after it leaves the brewery,” said Tata. “My colleagues and I developed NitroBrew to deliver a dependable mix of nitrogen and carbon dioxide with every pour at the point of service, whether it’s a bar, a restaurant or at home.”
