The talk about international interest in craft beer isn’t just something we bring up to show how worldy we are (we are not). The headlines just keep on coming. This week, Channel NewsAsia had a trends piece on the growing craft beer movement happening in Singapore.
From Channel NewsAsia:
“Craft beer is gaining popularity because Singaporeans travel a lot, they see the world, they go to Germany, they go to Europe, they go to America and craft beer brings to Singapore different dimensions of what beer should be,” said Mr Ian Lim from Dreamfields, a craft beer provider.
The interest right now is being driven by whatever imports the country can get its hands on, but that is starting to change:
For those who want something extra special, there are also beers brewed in Singapore, including the RedDot BrewHouse, which started in 2007.
“We do not want to take the beaten path,” said Ms Kok Mui Lee, director of the RedDot BrewHouse. “We wanted something different, and I think this is quite a niche market. In fact, I think in the West, you would describe it like a boutique brewery, small and quaint, a nice, small local brewery.
All great movements have to start somewhere. At this rate, RedDot will be opening a brewery in North Carolina in no time. Cheers to RedDot and the other craft-loving Singaporeans.

Errr. Red Dot in North Carolina? I don’t see how. The brewery can’t even seem to get its beer making down pat, much less attract a good local following for its beers.

@CraftBrewingBiz Great! I wonder how the high alcohol taxes will play into this? 6 weeks in Singapore almost broke the bank for me.
