Watch Brooklyn Brewery’s Garrett Oliver make a beer based on Mexican mole sauce

Not unlike CBB, Skillshare is an online learning community aimed at mastering real-world skills. Skillshare does this through excellent project-based classes. The website’s mission is simple — provide universal access to high-quality learning — and now that education extends to the craft and homebrewing markets.

Brooklyn Brewery brewmaster Garrett Oliver, one of the great minds in brewing, launched his first online class with Skillshare last week, called “Creativity and Beer: A Brewmaster’s Guide to Flavor Emulation.” You can watch a teaser for the lesson above. Garrett’s innovative approach recently earned him the coveted 2014 James Beard Foundation Award for Excellence. With his first online class at Skillshare, Garrett is giving brewers and beer lovers around the globe an inside look at his creative process.

In the 40-minute class, Garrett crafts his own emulation recipe based on Mexican mole sauce. He journeys to restaurant La Palapa in NYC to discover its ingredients from head chef Barbara Sibley. Then, he heads to the kitchen to work his magic. Along the way, Garrett teaches lessons on finding inspiration, selecting a base beer, researching foods, hunting down ingredients, and determining when those ingredients should be added to the brew.

Please note that this is NOT a Brewing 101 class. Garrett goes through the process of creating a beer recipe, but he does not guide you through every detail of actually brewing beer.
